Arctic reindeer hike
To hike with reindeers is relaxing but still exiting, because reindeer hiking means that the reindeer carry your equipment while you hike to the arctic mountain plateau.
Why did people hike with reindeers?
Sami's used reindeers as transportation in centuries. At summertime they hiked with reindeers, having the reindeers carry their equipment used while reindeer herding. As the distances are great it was impossible to carry such weight and then large male reindeers were perfect for this purpose. Also at wintertime the Sami´s use reindeers for transportation, but then they use a sled and have the reindeer pulling the sled. A part of Reisa valley is the Reisa national park where driving ATV´s or other types of machines is denied by the government, so reindeer hiking is great way to walk in Reisa national park.
Where do we hike with the reindeer?
We use reindeers for short trips and also for long trips. We use the reindeers when going fishing on the arctic mountain plateau and then the reindeer will be carrying your fishing equipment and food. The very short trips we only hike in Reisa valley, it´s an outdoor escape to experience the nature of the Arctic.
Why should you go reindeer hiking?
The reindeer hiking is a part of Sami Culture program about Sami reindeer herding culture and it gives you deep culture insight, lifestyle and life of the Sami´s. It´s not only about hiking, it´s about learning to get close to natures in all ways possible.
Also, if you are coming to Norway to fish in world class fishing places we use reindeers to get into the lakes where the biggest fish is. When we hike with reindeers we can walk great distance. It´s safe, it´s easy and it´s just a "must do" experience in the Arctic.

The Winter Troms can be as beautiful as the summer Troms, just like reindeer hiking is as fantastic as reindeer sledding. Contact Ailo at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to plan your holiday.
